Designed primarily for Sony cameras equipped with a compatible Multi Interface (MI) Shoe featuring a digital audio interface, the Sony ECM-W5 Receiver connects directly to the camera for cable-free digital audio transmission and camera-supplied power. When paired with separately available ECM-W5T microphone/transmitters, it supports high-resolution audio capture, up to four-channel in-camera recording, wireless headphone monitoring, and timecode synchronization. Compatible Sony cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly into the video file, simplifying postproduction and file management. Beyond Sony camera setups, the receiver also supports compatible computers, mobile devices, and cameras without an MI Shoe, making it a versatile option for interviews, video production, live streaming, and content creation.
Through a compatible Sony camera's MI Shoe, the ECM-W5 supports digital audio recording at up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. Supported cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly as an audio track within the video file, eliminating the need to manage and synchronize a separate audio recording. This flexibility allows quiet dialogue and sudden volume peaks to be adjusted during postproduction, reducing the need for constant gain adjustments while shooting. Compatible cameras also support simultaneous WAV recording, allowing an audio source to be retained separately from the video file for additional flexibility during editing.
Automatic input gain helps prevent clipping and distortion, while manual gain adjustment from -12 to +12 dB is available even during 32-bit float recording. Switchable noise-cut and low-cut functions provide further control over unwanted background noise and low-frequency sounds.
Paired with compatible ECM-W5T transmitters, the receiver supports up to four in-camera audio channels, allowing multiple speakers to be recorded on separate tracks. This arrangement simplifies editing interviews, conversations, and other multi-person productions by providing independent control over each speaker's audio.
The system offers low-latency wireless transmission over distances of up to approximately 1,640 feet under line-of-sight conditions. Bluetooth hopping technology and an optimized wireless design help maintain stable connections and minimize dropouts, even in environments with substantial radio-frequency congestion. These capabilities make the receiver suitable for a variety of production settings, from controlled interviews to on-location reporting.
The ECM-W5 supports compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones for cable-free audio monitoring during recording. It can also capture audio from the microphone built into compatible Sony wireless headphones, allowing that audio to be recorded in-camera. With a compatible microphone, binaural recording provides a sense of spatial depth when capturing ambient sound, adding another option for immersive audio applications.
For greater flexibility in microphone placement, the receiver includes a mono 3.5mm external microphone input that accepts compatible lavalier microphones, including the separately available Sony ECM-L1. This allows users to incorporate an external microphone into their recording setup when a different placement or more discreet appearance is preferred.
Timecode functionality helps synchronize footage during postproduction, making the ECM-W5 useful for multi-camera productions. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C cable connects the receiver to a compatible Sony camera to synchronize with timecode stored in the video metadata, supporting more efficient editing workflows.
The receiver also connects to compatible smartphones and computers for USB audio recording. Devices supporting USB Audio Class 2.0 can use this connection for digital audio capture, including 32-bit float recording where supported. This broader compatibility allows the receiver to serve different recording setups without being limited to cameras equipped with Sony's MI Shoe.
A high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen provides access to receiver settings, complemented by a control wheel/button for convenient operation. LED indicators display power, recording, and wireless connection status, making it easy to check the system at a glance. When attached to a compatible Sony camera, the receiver draws power through the MI Shoe, reducing dependence on its internal battery during extended shoots. When configured in advance, camera-linked power control can also activate the receiver and paired microphones, helping simplify startup and day-to-day operation.
For standalone use, the ECM-W5 receiver provides up to seven hours of continuous operation on a full charge. When connected to a compatible camera, MI Shoe power supports longer recording sessions without relying solely on the receiver's internal battery. Combined with its wireless monitoring, multi-channel recording, and flexible connectivity options, the ECM-W5 provides a versatile audio hub for Sony camera systems and compatible recording devices.
