Designed for interviews, video production, live streaming, and content creation, the Sony ECM-W5 is a two-person wireless microphone system built to deliver high-quality audio with compatible Sony cameras and a wide range of other devices. Its receiver attaches directly to Sony cameras equipped with a compatible Multi Interface (MI) Shoe with a digital audio interface, providing cable-free digital audio transmission and camera-supplied power. The system includes two microphone/transmitters, a receiver, a charging case, and a USB-C adapter, along with onboard backup recording, wireless audio monitoring, and timecode synchronization for streamlined production workflows.
When paired with a compatible Sony camera, the ECM-W5 supports digital audio recording at up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. Supported cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly into the video file, eliminating the need to manage and synchronize separate audio recordings. This expanded recording flexibility allows quiet dialogue and sudden volume peaks to be adjusted during postproduction, helping preserve usable audio without constant gain adjustments during filming. Automatic input gain helps prevent clipping and distortion, while manual gain control from -12 to +12 dB remains available, even during 32-bit float recording. Switchable noise-cut and low-cut functions provide additional control over unwanted background noise and low-frequency sounds.
The ECM-W5 delivers low-latency wireless audio transmission over distances of up to approximately 1,640 feet under line-of-sight conditions. Its optimized wireless design incorporates Bluetooth hopping technology to help maintain a stable connection and minimize dropouts in congested radio environments. For convenient monitoring, the receiver supports compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones, allowing you to check audio without a wired connection. The system can also capture audio from the microphone in compatible Sony wireless headphones, offering an alternative for lightweight vlogging setups. With a compatible microphone, binaural recording adds a sense of spatial depth to ambient sound.
Each microphone/transmitter features 64GB of internal storage for independent recording and backup, providing an additional layer of security for important audio. Compatible Sony cameras also support simultaneous WAV recording, allowing a separate 32-bit float audio recording to be retained independently of the video file. Recordings stored internally can be transferred to a computer over USB-C, either directly from the microphone or through the charging case.
For larger productions, the system can accommodate up to two additional ECM-W5T transmitters, available separately, enabling up to four speakers to be recorded simultaneously on separate tracks with a compatible camera. Convenient recording start/stop controls on the microphones help simplify operation during interviews, presentations, and other productions.
Both the transmitter and receiver feature a mono 3.5mm external microphone input, allowing connection to compatible lavalier microphones, including the optional Sony ECM-L1. The transmitter's locking TRS connector helps prevent accidental cable disconnection during recording. Clip and magnetic attachment options provide flexible placement on clothing or other suitable surfaces, while the discreet design is well suited to on-camera interviews. Its upright form factor can also be held comfortably for handheld reporting and live streaming.
Although optimized for compatible Sony cameras, the ECM-W5 also works with compatible smartphones, computers, and cameras without an MI Shoe. The included USB-C adapter allows the receiver to connect directly to supported devices with USB Audio Class 2.0 compatibility, including devices that support 32-bit float recording. This versatility makes the system useful for creators who move between camera-based production, mobile recording, and computer-based streaming.
Timecode functionality helps align footage during postproduction, making the ECM-W5 a practical option for multi-camera workflows. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C connection links the receiver to a compatible Sony camera to synchronize with timecode stored in the video metadata. The receiver features a high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen and a control wheel/button for adjusting settings. Its charging case simplifies setup: opening the case places the receiver in standby, while removing the units powers them on for use. When configured in advance, camera-linked power through the MI Shoe can also activate the receiver and microphones.
The microphones and standalone receiver each offer up to seven hours of continuous operation on a full charge. When the receiver draws power from a compatible camera through the MI Shoe, charging the microphones through the case can extend total operating time to up to 11 hours. LED indicators provide at-a-glance information about power, recording, and connection status. Reflecting Sony's sustainability efforts, recycled materials account for more than 41% of the plastic weight used in the main unit, adding an environmental consideration to this versatile wireless audio system.
