The Sony FX6 Full-Frame Cinema Camera combines the imaging capabilities of a professional cinema camera with a remarkably compact, lightweight body designed for fast-moving production. Built around a 10.2MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and Sony's powerful BIONZ XR image processor, the FX6 delivers exceptional sensitivity, wide dynamic range, fast autofocus, and cinematic color reproduction.
With more than 15 stops of dynamic range, S-Cinetone color science, 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, and support for professional codecs including XAVC-I, the FX6 is equally suited to narrative filmmaking, documentaries, commercials, events, gimbal work, and aerial production. It also shares many of its core imaging characteristics with Sony's FX9 and VENICE cinema cameras, making it an excellent compact companion for larger Cinema Line systems.
The FX6's 4K full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor uses a back-illuminated design to provide excellent light-gathering capability and low-light performance. Its native sensitivity is complemented by a high-sensitivity base of ISO 12,800, while the camera's extended sensitivity range reaches ISO 409,600 for extremely challenging lighting conditions.
The sensor provides 627 phase-detection autofocus points covering a large portion of the image area, enabling fast and accurate subject acquisition. Its high-speed readout also helps minimize rolling-shutter distortion while supporting high frame rates and responsive autofocus.
The full-frame format works with Sony E-mount lenses to provide the shallow depth of field, expansive field of view, and immersive rendering expected from a professional full-frame cinema camera.
The FX6 is designed to preserve subtle details in both highlights and shadows, providing more than 15 stops of dynamic range for demanding cinematic applications.
For maximum latitude, Cine EI mode with S-Log3 provides a professional log workflow designed for extensive color grading. The camera also supports S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine, making it easier to match footage with Sony Cinema Line cameras such as the FX9 and VENICE.
For productions where speed is more important than extensive post-production, S-Cinetone provides attractive cinematic color and pleasing skin tones directly from the camera.
The FX6 offers exceptional sensitivity for both controlled production environments and available-light shooting. Its dual-base sensitivity architecture provides a base ISO of 800 for conventional lighting and 12,800 for low-light conditions, while sensitivity can be extended as high as ISO 409,600.
This makes the FX6 particularly useful for documentary, event, nighttime, and other situations where adding lighting is impractical.
One of the FX6's most useful features for professional cinematography is its electronically variable ND filter system. Instead of changing aperture or shutter speed to compensate for changing light, you can adjust the ND filter while maintaining your desired exposure and depth of field.
The filter can be operated automatically or manually, with manual density adjustments ranging from 1/4 to 1/128. This makes it possible to move smoothly between different lighting conditions while maintaining consistent cinematic settings.
The FX6 supports high-quality 10-bit 4:2:2 recording using Sony's professional XAVC codecs. It can record UHD 4K internally using XAVC-I, providing high-quality intra-frame compression at data rates reaching 600 Mb/s.
Additional XAVC Intra and XAVC Long recording options provide flexibility when balancing image quality, recording time, storage requirements, and post-production workflow.
The camera can also output RAW data for compatible external recorders, providing an even more flexible workflow for productions requiring maximum image information.
The FX6 provides extensive slow-motion capabilities for capturing action and creating expressive cinematic effects.

CFexpress Type A media is required for the camera's highest frame-rate recording modes.
Sony's S-Cinetone gamma curve is designed to produce rich, cinematic color with natural-looking skin tones and attractive tonal transitions. It can be used directly for finished-looking footage, reducing the amount of color grading required in fast-turnaround productions.
For more advanced workflows, the FX6 supports S-Log3, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine, giving filmmakers extensive control over color and making footage easier to integrate with Sony's higher-end Cinema Line cameras.
The FX6 combines phase-detection autofocus with contrast detection for fast, precise focusing. Its autofocus system features Face Detection and Real-time Eye AF, helping maintain focus on people and other subjects even when they move through the frame.
Autofocus behavior can also be customized, including seven transition-speed settings and five subject-shift sensitivity settings, allowing operators to tailor focusing behavior to different shooting situations.
The Sony E mount provides access to a broad selection of native lenses, including Sony's full-frame FE lineup and compatible third-party E-mount optics.
Despite its professional cinema capabilities, the FX6 is exceptionally compact and lightweight. Its body weighs less than 2 lb and measures approximately 6 x 4.6 inches, making it considerably more portable than larger cinema cameras such as the FX9.
The modular design allows the camera to be configured for different production environments. Remove unnecessary accessories for a streamlined gimbal or drone setup, or add the optional smart grip and smart handle for handheld operation and fingertip control.
The camera's 3.5-inch LCD monitor can be positioned for comfortable viewing and provides touchscreen access to frequently used settings.

Although compact, the FX6 provides the connectivity expected from a professional cinema camera. Its interfaces include a selectable 12G/6G/3G-SDI output, HDMI output, and SDI-based RAW output.
The camera also incorporates timecode input/output for synchronizing multiple cameras and other production equipment, along with built-in Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity and remote operation.
The FX6 can record up to four channels of audio using its combination of inputs and accessories. Sources can include the camera's two XLR inputs, the two-channel Multi Interface Shoe, and the stereo microphone integrated into the camera's top handle.
This configuration allows filmmakers to combine professional external microphones with ambient sound or operator voice notes without requiring an external audio recorder for every application.
Two memory-card slots provide flexible recording and media options. The FX6 accepts both CFexpress Type A cards and SDXC cards, including UHS-II and UHS-I media.
CFexpress Type A cards are required for the camera's highest-performance recording modes, including 100/120 fps UHD 4K and 150–240 fps Full HD recording.
When used with Sony's Catalyst Prepare/Browse software, the FX6 can take advantage of motion metadata recorded by the camera to assist with post-production stabilization. Catalyst can also use recorded metadata to automatically rotate gimbal footage and provide additional tools for organizing and reviewing clips.
This workflow can be particularly useful for handheld, gimbal, documentary, and action-oriented production where optical or mechanical stabilization alone may not be sufficient.
The FX6 uses a magnesium-alloy chassis that combines low weight with the durability required for professional production. Its thermal-management design helps dissipate heat during extended recording, while sealing around the exterior seams, buttons, and interfaces improves resistance to dust and moisture.

Version 2.5.0 or later of the Monitor & Control application is required for its associated new functions, and application availability may vary by country or region.
The FX6's built-in Wi-Fi enables wireless operation with compatible mobile devices. With Sony's Content Browser Mobile application, users can remotely monitor footage and control functions such as focus, iris, and zoom when supported by the connected lens and setup.
