First introduced in October 1996, the GR series has become known for combining high image quality with the portability and immediacy of a compact snapshot camera. The Ricoh GR IV 30th Anniversary Edition Kit commemorates three decades of the GR series with a selection of exclusive cosmetic details and accessories, while incorporating the latest performance and imaging features of the GR IV.
The camera features specially finished shutter-release and rear buttons inspired by the plated finish of the original film GR1. When the camera is powered off, a dedicated 30th Anniversary graphic appears on the display, providing another distinctive touch unique to this edition.
An exclusive GN-3 (30th) ring cap is included, featuring a diamond-cut design inspired by the lens area of the GR1. Its faceted surfaces catch the light when the lens is retracted, while the design minimizes unwanted reflections appearing in the subject during shooting. The kit also includes a genuine leather finger strap engraved with "30th ANNIVERSARY" on its reverse side and designed to occupy minimal space when carried or stored.
A special-edition GK-2 (30th) metal hot shoe cover in steel gray is also included. The 30th Anniversary logo is engraved on the front, while "RICOH GR" appears on the reverse. Completing the commemorative package is a set of 16 special pin badges, including 14 badges representing previous GR models, a kit-exclusive 30th Anniversary logo, and a GR logo.
At the heart of the GR IV is a newly developed 25.7MP APS-C BSI CMOS sensor paired with the GR ENGINE 7 image processor. The back-illuminated sensor is designed to deliver cleaner images and reduced noise, while the new processing engine provides approximately one stop of improved low-light performance compared with the previous generation.
GR ENGINE 7 also contributes to a startup time of approximately 0.6 seconds, faster focusing, and sensitivity up to ISO 204800. The camera supports both 14-bit DNG and JPEG recording for flexible image capture and post-processing.
The sensor uses an anti-aliasing filter-less design to maximize sharpness and resolution. When photographing subjects with fine repeating patterns, such as certain fabrics, the Shake Reduction mechanism can simulate the effect of an AA filter to help reduce moiré.
The GR IV's autofocus system has been redesigned for faster and more responsive operation. The combination of GR ENGINE 7 processing and the lighter, newly designed lens reduces focus hunting while improving face recognition, eye detection, and subject tracking.
During autofocus shooting, the camera detects faces and eyes, focuses on the selected subject, and displays the in-focus position within the AF frame. When several faces are detected, the camera can distinguish the primary subject from secondary subjects and indicate this within the focus display.
For street photography and other situations where timing is critical, Full Press Snap allows the photographer to bypass conventional autofocus by fully pressing the shutter button. The lens immediately focuses at a preset distance, minimizing focusing delay when capturing decisive moments.
The GR IV replaces the previous generation's 3-axis stabilization system with a 5-axis Shake Reduction mechanism capable of compensating for up to 6 stops of camera shake. The expanded stabilization system addresses more types of camera movement, making handheld shooting more effective in low-light conditions and at slower shutter speeds.
The GR IV retains the series' signature fixed 28mm-equivalent lens, providing a wide-angle perspective well suited to everyday photography, street scenes, travel, and environmental subjects. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture provides a balance of low-light capability and compact dimensions.
The completely redesigned optical system uses 7 elements in 5 groups, including aspherical, high-refractive-index (HR), and low-dispersion elements. This construction improves sharpness and resolution while also making the lens smaller and lighter, contributing to faster focusing and quicker deployment.
A dedicated Macro mode provides a close-focusing range of approximately 2.4 to 4.7", while the integrated 2-stop ND filter allows wider apertures or slower shutter speeds when desired. Built-in crop modes provide 35mm- and 50mm-equivalent fields of view for tighter compositions without changing lenses.
The GR IV includes 12 Image Control modes for applying distinctive looks in-camera, along with a new Cinema mode available with Yellow or Green tones for a more nostalgic, film-inspired appearance. Parameters including saturation, contrast, hue, key, and grain can be adjusted, with certain settings also offering control over strength and grain size. User-created settings can be saved as custom Image Control modes.
When shooting in Program AE, the new Program Auto Ex function allows quick switching to Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority by turning the front or rear e-Dial. A new Snap Distance-Priority AE (Sn) exposure mode emphasizes depth of field and adjusts exposure settings according to the desired depth-of-field effect.
The camera supports Multi-Segment, Center-Weighted, Spot, and Highlight-Weighted metering. Highlight-Weighted metering prioritizes retaining highlight detail within the available dynamic range while allowing shadows to remain darker for a more dramatic appearance.
An integrated multi-exposure mode allows an unlimited number of sequential exposures to be composited in-camera without a set frame limit.
In addition to still photography, the GR IV records Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates, providing options for both conventional video capture and more cinematic-looking footage.
Despite incorporating a larger sensor, new stabilization system, larger internal storage, and a higher-capacity battery, the GR IV maintains the compact form that defines the GR series. The body is slimmer than its predecessor for a more secure grip and retains a lightweight yet rigid magnesium alloy construction.
The new DB-120 battery provides approximately 250 shots per charge, compared with approximately 200 shots for the previous generation. Internal storage has been expanded to 53GB, while the memory card slot now accepts the smaller microSD format.
A USB-C port supports both in-camera battery charging and data transfer.
The control layout has also been revised for easier access, and the former ADJ lever has been replaced with a dial for more intuitive operation.
The rear 3.0" 1.04-million-dot touchscreen LCD uses an air gapless construction that helps reduce reflections and improve visibility outdoors. The Outdoor Monitor Setting can increase screen brightness for use under strong midday light, while a new Auto monitor brightness setting automatically adjusts display brightness according to ambient lighting.
The dedicated GR WORLD app provides a streamlined way to connect the GR IV with a mobile device. Using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, users can transfer images and other files, remotely control the shutter, and transfer location data.
The GR IV's top hot shoe supports optional external flashes, including the compact GF-2 External Flash, which is designed to complement the camera's small body. It offers an Auto Flash mode with automatic exposure metering, a guide number of 9.8' at ISO 100, and a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with USB-C charging.
The optional BJ-12 Battery Charger can charge two DB-120 batteries simultaneously.
The included GN-3 ring cap can be removed to install the optional GA-3 Lens Adapter, which provides compatibility with 49mm screw-on filters and the GW-4 Wide Conversion Lens for an even wider field of view.
