The 2nd edition of this popular 70–400 mm F4-5.6 G Lens retains its predecessor's superb optical design, including two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, but adds a Nano AR coating that further reduces unwanted reflections for clear images with minimal flare and ghosting. Outstanding optical performance rivals prime-lens quality throughout the zoom range.
In addition to precision optical design, Sony's Nano AR Coating technology produces a lens coating with a precisely defined regular nano-structure that effectively suppresses reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The overall result is superior clarity and crisp contrast that add up to outstanding definition.
Sony's SSM autofocus drive system is a desirable feature in itself, offering exceptionally smooth, quiet operation. A new LSI drive circuit takes that performance to a new level, achieving significantly faster autofocus subject tracking than previous models, and making the SSM drive system more responsive than ever.
The SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) is a piezoelectric drive system that contributes to smooth, silent autofocus operation. Its capacity for high torque at low rotational speeds contributes to fast start and stop response as well as precise positioning. To the photographer that means quick, quiet, accurate focus.
Three focus hold buttons around the lens barrel provide easy access no matter how the camera is held. Sony's thorough attention to operational ease is also apparent in a focus mode and range limiter switch, and DMF (Direct manual Focus) capability.
Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements contribute to prime-lens class sharpness and definition throughout the zoom range, but this lens can also produce gorgeous background bokeh when needed.
In addition to offering a very versatile zoom range, this lens can focus as close as 0.55 in for a 0.27 magnification ratio that makes it possible to capture small subjects and details with excellent quality.
A 9-blade circular aperture design makes it possible to produce beautifully smooth background bokeh with natural highlights when desired. Smooth background defocusing can make the in-focus focus really stand out in images with almost three-dimensional depth.
Some of the most exciting images are captured in challenging environments. A dust and moisture resistant design means that the lens will continue to perform reliably in moderately wet or dusty conditions, so you can shoot with confidence wherever those great shots are found.
