Filters are used to achieve various effects on photos, particularly black and white, and color film. Red filters are used to greatly increase contrast in black and white film photos. Yellow filters absorb UV and blue light, making blue skies appear darker in black and white film photos. Green filters reduces red and blue light, while allowing green and yellow through. This is helpful for black and white film portraits, making skin tones look more natural.
