The Leica SELIS and SELSY components make up a classic, vintage synchronized flash system designed by E. Leitz New York during the 1940s and 1950s. This historical setup allowed early Leica screw mount (LTM) rangefinder cameras—which lacked internal flash synchronization or a hot shoe—to fire flashbulbs or electronic flashes in sync with the physical curtain shutter.
System Components & Mechanics Leica SELIS (Synchronized Flash Unit VIII / VIIIA): This refers to the actual flash unit/gun assembly, featuring the reflector bulb holder, battery handle, and linking cords.
Leica SELSY (Flash Synchro Base Plate): This specialized replacement bottom base plate replaces the standard Leica camera base plate. It features an internal mechanical linkage that physically touches the camera's internal shutter mechanism from underneath.
