The Stereo Realist is a iconic vintage 35mm film camera produced by the David White Company from 1947 to 1971, which popularized 3D stereoscopic photography in the mid-20th century. It was designed by Seton Rochwite and is widely considered the most popular 35mm stereo camera ever manufactured
Key Features and Specifications
Imaging Mechanism: The camera uses two lenses and two shutters to capture two distinct images simultaneously, spaced approximately 7 cm apart to mimic human eye separation.
Film Format: It uses standard 135 (35mm) film, producing 5-perforation-wide stereo pairs (23.4 x 24 mm each).
Lenses: The standard models are equipped with David White f/3.5 anastigmat lenses.
Model Variants:
ST-41/ST-42 (f/3.5): The standard models.
Realist f/2.8 (Model 1042): Introduced later (1956–1971), it featured faster f/2.8 lenses and a higher shutter speed of 1/200 second, compared to the standard 1/150.
Custom (Model 1050): Featured high-resolution Steinheil lenses.
Focusing: Unlike most cameras, the Realist focuses by moving the film plane rather than the lenses.
Viewfinder: It features two eyepieces on the back: one for composition and one for a split-image rangefinder.
