Leica Q3 Mirrorless Camera – Refined Performance, Iconic Design
Blending heritage aesthetics with cutting-edge capability, the Leica Q3 advances the brand’s fixed-lens full-frame concept into its most powerful form yet. As the third generation in the Q series, it retains the proven formula of its predecessors while introducing major upgrades, including a 60MP sensor, enhanced hybrid autofocus, and advanced 8K video recording. Complemented by a redesigned electronic viewfinder and a new tilting touchscreen, the Q3 is built for photographers and creators who demand both precision and versatility.
At the core of the Q3 is a 60MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor derived from the Leica M11. This high-resolution sensor delivers exceptional detail, improved low-light performance, and faster readout speeds, making it equally suited for still photography and video capture. The BSI architecture enhances color accuracy and reduces noise, especially when working at elevated ISO levels.
The increased resolution also enables flexible digital cropping, effectively simulating multiple focal lengths. Users can switch between perspectives equivalent to 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 90mm, expanding creative possibilities without changing lenses.
Borrowed from the M11 platform, Leica’s Triple Resolution Technology allows users to choose between 60MP, 36MP, or 18MP output. Each setting utilizes the entire sensor area, maintaining consistent field of view while optimizing file size and workflow. All resolutions benefit from 14-bit color depth and an impressive 14-stop dynamic range.
The Q3 introduces the Maestro IV processor, paired with 8GB of buffer memory to ensure fast, responsive operation. This new processing engine supports continuous shooting at up to 15 fps, expands the ISO range from 50 to 100,000, and enhances performance across both photo and video workflows. It also improves efficiency when using features like Triple Resolution Technology and live viewing through the EVF and LCD.
Continuing the Q tradition, the Q3 features the integrated Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens. This fast wide-angle prime delivers excellent sharpness, minimal distortion, and strong low-light capability. Its tactile design allows direct control over focus and aperture, while a dedicated macro mode enables close focusing down to 6.7 inches. Optical image stabilization further ensures sharp handheld results.
A newly developed hybrid autofocus system combines phase-detection, contrast-detection, and Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) technologies. This results in faster, more accurate focusing performance, particularly with moving subjects or challenging lighting conditions. Advanced subject recognition enables reliable tracking of eyes, faces, bodies, and animals.
The Q3 is designed as a true hybrid camera, offering powerful video performance alongside its still imaging strengths. It supports internal DCI 8K recording at up to 30p in 10-bit 4:2:0 color, with external recording available via micro-HDMI. In 4K, users can record 10-bit 4:2:2 footage at up to 60p, while Full HD recording reaches 120p for smooth slow-motion playback. A true 24p frame rate is supported across all resolutions for cinematic output.
Additionally, Full HD recording supports internal ProRes 422 HQ capture at up to 60p, offering professional-grade quality. USB-C and micro-HDMI ports provide compatibility with external recorders, monitors, and power solutions.
The Q3 introduces a refined viewing experience with a 5.76-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder featuring a 120 fps refresh rate for smooth, lifelike motion. With 0.79x magnification and automatic eye detection, it offers comfortable and accurate composition.
For the first time in the Q series, the camera includes a tilting 3.0" touchscreen LCD. This 1.84-million-dot display supports flexible shooting angles and intuitive touch controls.
Maintaining its compact, everyday form factor, the Q3 features a magnesium alloy body with IP52-rated dust and moisture resistance. A new BP-SCL6 battery delivers approximately 350 shots per charge while remaining compatible with previous-generation batteries.
Connectivity ports include USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 for fast data transfer, tethering, and in-camera charging, as well as a micro-HDMI output for external monitoring. The camera supports a single UHS-II SD card for high-speed storage.
With upgraded Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0, the Q3 offers significantly faster wireless performance. File transfer speeds of up to 35MB/s allow full-resolution images to be sent to a mobile device in seconds.
The updated Leica FOTOS app enables seamless image transfer, remote control, and the ability to apply Leica Looks such as Contemporary, Classic, Blue, Selenium, and Sepia. GPS data can also be embedded using a connected smartphone.
For added convenience, the Q3 supports wireless charging when paired with the optional HG-DC1 Wireless Charging Handgrip and compatible Qi charging pads.
Combining precision engineering with modern imaging technology, the Leica Q3 stands as a versatile, high-performance camera designed for photographers and creators who value both form and function. Its blend of portability, power, and intuitive operation makes it an exceptional choice for capturing everything from everyday moments to professional work.
