The Nikon F-501, also known as the N2020, was one of the first autofocus SLRs to offer interchangeable focusing screens. Among these, the Type J screen stands out as a versatile option aimed at photographers who prefer manual focusing or want a more tactile sense of focus accuracy than the standard autofocus viewfinder provides.
The Type J focusing screen features a matte Fresnel field with a central micro-prism spot enclosed within a 12 mm circle. This combination gives a bright, evenly illuminated view while providing a clear visual cue for focus confirmation. When the subject is out of focus, the micro-prism area shimmers or breaks apart; when focus is achieved, the shimmer disappears and the image “snaps” into clarity. The etched circle corresponds roughly to the area used for centre-weighted metering and serves as a useful framing reference.
