Canon EOS R8 Mark II Mirrorless Camera

Full-Frame Performance in a Travel-Ready Body

The Canon EOS R8 Mark II Mirrorless Camera combines a lightweight, compact design with the performance expected from a modern full-frame hybrid camera. Built around a 24.2MP CMOS sensor, the R8 Mark II delivers detailed still images along with 6K-oversampled UHD 4K 60p 10-bit video, while 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization helps keep handheld shooting steady. Improved continuous shooting, pre-capture, advanced subject detection, and registered-person autofocus further expand its capabilities for travel, portraits, events, action, and everyday content creation.

Key Features

  • 24.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor: Produces detailed, high-quality still images while supporting advanced video recording capabilities.

  • Up to 40 fps Continuous Shooting: High-speed electronic shutter shooting captures fast-moving subjects, with an improved buffer capable of recording up to 73 RAW images or 190 JPEG images continuously.

  • Pre-Capture: Half-pressing the shutter button begins recording images to the buffer, allowing you to capture up to 20 frames from the preceding 0.5 seconds when the shutter is fully pressed.

  • 7.5-Stop 5-Axis IBIS: In-body image stabilization provides up to 7.5 stops of correction at the center and 7 stops at the edges for still photography, with stabilization working in conjunction with compatible lenses.

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II: Autofocus covers 100% of the frame, allowing subjects to be tracked across the image area.

  • Intelligent Subject Detection: Recognizes people, animals, and vehicles, with subject-specific detection including faces, eyes, and driver helmets.

  • Registered People Priority: Register specific people in advance and configure autofocus to prioritize them, useful for weddings, group portraits, events, and other situations where multiple people are in the frame.

  • Low-Light AF: Autofocus sensitivity reaches down to -7.5 EV, supporting focusing in particularly dark environments.

  • 6K-Oversampled 4K 60p: Record UHD 4K video at up to 60p with 10-bit color, along with Full HD recording at up to 180p for slow-motion footage.

  • Canon Log 3: Provides up to 14 stops of dynamic range for advanced color grading workflows, with additional Canon 709 and BT.709 Standard options available.

  • Built-In Creative Modes: Includes 14 SCN presets, Positive and Negative Filmtone modes, and Advanced A+ processing for in-camera creative results.

  • 2.36m-Dot OLED EVF: The electronic viewfinder offers a 100% view and refresh rates up to 120 fps for a clear, fluid shooting experience.

  • 3.0" 1.62m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen: The fully articulating display makes it easier to compose from high, low, and front-facing angles, while touch-and-drag controls allow intuitive AF-point selection.

  • Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Connect wirelessly to compatible smart devices through the Canon Camera Connect app for remote control, image transfer, and GPS location data.

  • USB-C Connectivity: Supports charging and data transfer, as well as wired smartphone connectivity and UVC/UAC functionality for use as a webcam without additional software.

  • Live-Streaming and Multi-Camera Support: Wi-Fi connectivity allows the camera to serve as a video source for multi-camera live-switching setups through Canon Live Switcher Mobile.

  • Multi-Function Shoe: The accessory shoe incorporates additional contacts to expand accessory functionality and provide power to compatible accessories.

  • Weather-Ready Connectivity: Includes micro-HDMI video output, stereo microphone input, stereo headphone output, USB-C, and an E3-type remote terminal.

High-Speed Shooting and Pre-Capture

The R8 Mark II is designed to help capture fleeting moments that can be difficult to anticipate. Its electronic shutter supports continuous shooting at up to 40 fps, while improved buffer capacity allows for longer bursts than the original EOS R8.

The addition of pre-capture provides another advantage when photographing unpredictable action. With the shutter button half-pressed, the camera begins recording images to its buffer. Fully pressing the shutter saves the preceding sequence, including up to 20 frames from the previous half-second, helping capture moments that occur just before you react.

The increased buffer accommodates up to 73 consecutive RAW images, representing a 30% increase, or up to 190 JPEG images, a 55% increase.

Advanced Autofocus for People, Animals, and Action

Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system provides autofocus coverage across 100% of the frame, giving the camera the ability to track subjects even when they move toward the edges of the composition. Intelligent subject detection can identify people, animals, and vehicles for both still photography and video.

For situations involving multiple people, Register People Priority allows specific individuals to be registered and prioritized by the autofocus system. This can be particularly useful for weddings, group portraits, lifestyle photography, presentations, and events where keeping focus on a particular person is important.

The system can recognize details such as faces and eyes, as well as driver helmets when tracking compatible vehicle subjects. With focusing available down to -7.5 EV, the R8 Mark II is also designed to maintain autofocus performance in very low-light environments.

7.5 Stops of In-Body Image Stabilization

A 5-axis IBIS system provides up to 7.5 stops of shake correction at the center of the frame and 7 stops at the edges for still photography. The stabilization system can work with the lens to provide additional correction, helping produce sharper handheld images at slower shutter speeds and steadier handheld video.

Full-Frame Video in a Compact Package

The R8 Mark II is equally capable as a video camera, recording 6K-oversampled UHD 4K at up to 60p with 10-bit color. This combination makes it well suited to travel videos, vlogging, interviews, social content, and general-purpose filmmaking.

For slow-motion footage, Full HD recording is available at up to 180p. The camera also includes Canon Log 3, offering up to 14 stops of dynamic range for productions that require greater flexibility during color grading. For simpler workflows, Canon 709 and BT.709 Standard options are also available.

A red tally lamp positioned on the subject-facing side provides a clear visual indication that movie recording is underway.

Built-In Creative Processing

The R8 Mark II offers several ways to produce distinctive images directly in the camera. The SCN mode provides 14 automated scene presets designed for specific shooting situations, ranging from studio portraits to handheld nighttime city scenes.

Positive Filmtone and Negative Filmtone modes digitally reproduce the appearance and tonality associated with classic positive and negative film, providing a more analog-inspired look without requiring post-processing.

For fully automated shooting, Advanced A+ mode analyzes the scene and uses intelligent bracketing and image processing to produce a finished image.

Compact Design for Travel and Everyday Shooting

The R8 Mark II adopts a redesigned flat-surface body that gives the camera a streamlined profile for carrying and packing while maintaining an ergonomic shooting experience. A newly added multi-controller joystick provides convenient thumb-operated control for adjusting focus points and navigating the camera's menus and display.

For photographers who prefer an electronic viewfinder, the camera features a bright 2.36-million-dot OLED EVF with a refresh rate of up to 120 fps. The viewfinder provides a 100% field of view, allowing the entire captured composition to be previewed.

The 3.0-inch 1.62-million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD can be positioned for shooting from unconventional angles or turned toward the front for self-recording. Touch-and-drag operation provides a quick way to reposition the autofocus point directly on the screen.

Wired and Wireless Connectivity

The R8 Mark II provides a comprehensive selection of connections, including USB-C, micro-HDMI, a stereo microphone input, a stereo headphone output, and an E3-type remote terminal.

Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow the camera to connect with compatible smartphones and other devices through the Canon Camera Connect app for remote operation and file transfer. The camera can also receive continuously updated GPS location information from a connected smartphone, allowing location data to be incorporated into images.

When connected to a smartphone or computer through USB-C, compatible Canon Camera Connect functions that normally operate over Wi-Fi can also be accessed through a wired connection. UVC/UAC support enables the R8 Mark II to function as a webcam without requiring additional software.

The camera can also serve as a video source for multi-camera live-switching setups through Canon Live Switcher Mobile.

Canon Multi-Function Shoe

The Multi-Function Shoe expands upon the capabilities of a conventional hot shoe by incorporating an additional row of contacts at the front. These contacts enable greater communication between the camera and compatible accessories and can provide power to select accessories that would otherwise require their own batteries.
